Make Southwest - PULP Exhibition

The exhibition "PULP" at MAKE Southwest in Bovey Tracey demonstrates the versatility and creativity of paper, showcasing its various forms and applications. This international exhibition, curated in collaboration with the Paper Artist Collective and GF Smith, presents works from 30 artists who explore paper's potential in remarkable ways.

From meticulously crafted paper cloaks to polished paper 'gemstones,' hyper-realistic plant replicas to paper made from mushrooms, this exhibition is a testament to the boundless ingenuity of artists working with this humble material. Some of my favorite pieces included James Lake's cardboard sculptures, which are created from a desire to 'level the playing field for the arts,' and Hazel Glass's 'Paper Strata,' which uses hundreds of layers of paper to build up 3D images.

Kate Kato's collection of natural plant and animal replicas are meticulously crafted from recycled paper, revealing hidden details of their past lives through remnants of interwoven text and imagery.

This exhibition invites audiences to reimagine the possibilities of paper beyond its conventional uses, whether through exquisitely cut pieces or expansive sculptural forms, showcasing the breadth of its applications and the diverse techniques employed by paper artists around the world.
