Cockington Sculpture Trail

Cockington Sculpture Trail, Torquay, July-November 2025.

The theme this year was prehistoric and the trail featured many local artists using a variety of mediums.

This ammonite sculpture was inspired by fossils at Torquay Museum, where you can find many different remains found throughout the bay and Kent’s Cavern, as well as a childhood fascination with fossil hunting along the coast. Ammonites first appeared during the Devonian period (a span of 60.3 million years in the Paleozoic Era, from 419.2 to 358.9 million years ago), and are significant for understanding ancient marine ecosystems and geological time. The Devonian Period was named after Devon, England, where its rocks were first studied in the 1800s.
