"We are Guardians of the image."

  • 'Don't worry about the colour space, don't worry about the resolution, just worry about the images.' - It's important to trust your gut and intuitive artistic eye and not get caught up in the technical details.

  • Using the 'Language of Film' helps to create a guide for good images that flow and manipulate the audience - still finding a balance between technical and intuitive imagery.

  • The way we judge these details has advanced and changed dramatically as technology has - a man in a white coat used to come and approve the lighting, colour contrast, etc. for each frame of a film.

  • Wanna see real resolution? Go look at older films - they take risks and trust the artist rather than the algorithms.

  • Have we gone backwards? Compression, colour filter erasure, we make compromise after compromise that loses that quality, in exchange for ease, convenience and smaller files.

  • 'We are guardians of the image' - everyone along the way is going to try and screw the image, as film makers it is our responsibility to preserve the quality of the film without compromising too much.

  • Pictures or pixels - presentation - resolution, gamma, colour space - developed into 'Fuck the Numbers!'

  • We used to be limited in our shots so there would be more consideration. We should make good decisions when taking the footage and images, rather than relying on editing afterwards. As creatives this is our job.

THINKING ABOUT OUR OWN WORK – what is the most important part and how can we portray this in our work?
