Three Proposals for Digital Artefacts

NARRATIVE FILM

I want to further develop my narrative film project by incorporating more detailed and fine-tuned story telling through light painting and editing techniques. My first attempt was very rough and didn't capture my imagery as I had wanted. I will spend some time developing these stories and perhaps creating more footage of other tales.

I have utilised light painting techniques to add a contemporary and modern twist to some traditional tales. I aim to further develop these techniques to create fine-tuned imagery and video effects to reflect the combined experiences of generations of storytelling and tradition. Further research into Dartmoor folklore will be conducted to create a rounded body of work and ideas for a series of short narrative pieces.

Next is to prepare a photography project to recreate the characters and locations within my intended storylines. Once I have enough imagery, I can then develop this digitally using the skills I have already developed on Premier Pro, while further enhancing my skills and techniques with this software. I will also attempt to use other programmes, such as YouCut on my phone, to manage faster development of project ideas, and short clips of imagery and film.

To ensure a well-developed line of enquiry and ideas, I will study relevant artists' work, including various filming styles and techniques throughout history and in the contemporary era. I will also incorporate stories from people and professionals in the local area as primary research and potentially as audio to use within the films.

PROJECTION MAPPING

I am interested in creating an immersive experience that explores the impact of technology on our lives. Using projection techniques, I aim to offer new perspectives on our digitised existence, shedding light on the hidden dangers of surveillance capitalism and data collection. I also want to examine how research into addictive website and social media design affects our physical and mental health. The digital age presents many moral ambiguities that threaten the planet, but I believe we can still create a future that is sustainable and harmonious.

The first step in this development is to contact the relevant departments within the University and gain access to software and projectors. After gaining an understanding of these technologies, it may be ideal to purchase my own projector for use out in the world, provided I can use the mapping software on my own laptop. I will need to create relevant pieces of art for experimentation so I can create a rounded body of work to advance into a well-developed artefact. I hope this technology will open many doors to the ways in which I can present my work and change the world around me.

Eventually, I will incorporate sensors to develop interactive installation pieces combined with the projection mapping techniques I will learn through this project. This is a great opportunity to experiment with performance art, film development and digital image creation.

I will use a variety of software to create visually striking images and videos to project, such as Photoshop, Premier Pro, Procreate, and various phone apps, such as Snapseed, YouCut and Glitchlab, which I already frequently use to create striking work. I will further research projection mapping artists and the ways in which this technology has already been developed, including surfaces and objects used, to ensure my work is original and unique.

DIGITAL ANIMATION - BANANA

The banana has been used within the art world extensively over the years. From Thomas Baumgärtel's spray paintings to  Maurizio Cattalan's Comedian, there is a playful symbolism represented by the fruit.

As somebody who works on connecting to their inner child, I am drawn to stress and fidget toys. One of these is a stretchy banana, which I plan to incorporate into an animation project. I will explore filming and photography techniques, stop motion and editing processes with a variety of software.

In my filming, I will include instances where the banana visits some other famous artworks that use the fruit as a symbol, either in person during a trip to London in March or by seeing them on television or in books, etc. The banana may try to mould itself into the shape of other artworks or sculptures or get into some mischief. To ensure I have some reliable ideas for footage and am not solely reliant on improvising, I will first work to draw up a few quick storyboard sketches for some staged performances or planned photographic works.

I have chosen this project as I want to explore a more fun and playful side of my work and further develop my filmmaking and digital skills. I want to open opportunities for reactionary footage and performance aspects within my work, interacting with the public and the physical world to impact the ways in which my viewers might understand the significance of the everyday banana and why it is often represented in the art world. Much like my Dartmoor Project, it is important for me to incorporate the passing on of messages and stories.

The stress banana is a curious object that always eventually morphs back into its original banana shape. This is a good reflection of how we mould and change ourselves to fit into society despite only ever being able to be ourselves in the long run. It raises the question of why we need stress-reducing objects - why do we feel stressed, and what causes this from a societal perspective? Is stress good? Is the stress banana the epitome of the capitalist agenda?

It is essential to research the significance of the banana within society and what it represents.  the shape the banana is moulded into could reflect the inner feelings of the sculptor or the wider experiences of society, while the phallic shape of the fruit invites sexual and feminist questioning.
