Artist Jo Lathwood visited us this week and shared her work with us, which is currently on display at The Mirror in Plymouth.
She started by introducing us to her large 3D sculptural works, which she had been commissioned to make. She then discussed her transition to using short films as a medium, as she could build a wider narrative in this way, helping the audience to understand 'how things come to be'. She highlighted her experiences forging metals and the way her pieces take on a life of their own.
I was particularly inspired by her manifesto, which helps her to keep to a strict code when realising her creations. Her aim is to use reclaimed and recycled materials, that can then be repurposed in the future. This resonated with my own style of working, as I generally try to use waste or recycled materials. Her large-scale installations are built to the specifications of the building, so are always organic and unique.
She also left us with advice on making our own narrative films, via her 'Toolkit for Film'.
